Enmax is harnessing the wind with a new project that will supply electricity to Calgary.
The company will start work this spring on a 80 megawatt wind farm near Taber. The facility will have 37 giant turbines to catch the breeze.
Enmax spokesperson Judy Duncan says the farm will supply enough power for 32,000 homes. Duncan says increasingly people are showing interest in renewable energy.
“We have the largest green product out there with our GreenMax program and in this particular case the city of Calgary has agreed to purchase 100 per cent of the output for this wind farm, so we know there’s a need out there and we’re happy to be able to step up to supply that,” Duncan said.
Once the wind farm is online, about 75 per cent of Calgary’s municipal operations will be fuelled by green power.
The project will cost $140 million and should running early next year.
